Short Bio of Jean-Robert Tyran

Jean-Robert Tyran is professor of public economics and director of the Vienna Center for Experimental Economics at the University of Vienna.

He has served as vice Dean for research, and as Dean of the Faculty of Business, Economics and Statistics (2014-18). He has been the Vice Rector of Research and International Affairs of the University of Vienna (2018-22).
He has served as associate editor of Judgment and Decision Making, and on various editorial boards (Experimental Economics, European Journal of Political Economy, Journal of the Economic Science Association, Journal of Experimental Political Science), and professional Boards (Society for the Advancement of Behavioral Economics, German Economic Association). He is a research fellow at various institutions (CEPR, London; CES Munich, EPRU, U Copenhagen) and has held numerous visiting positions (Harvard Kennedy School, Caltech, London School of Economics, among others). He is also part-time Professor at the Department of Economics at the University of Copenhagen.

Before moving to Vienna in September 2010, he was first associate, then full professor at U Copenhagen since 2004, and at U St. Gallen since 1997. He has earned his PhD in economics at the U of Zurich finishing in 1997.

In his research, Jean-Robert Tyran mainly investigates how institutions like markets and democracy are shaped by bounded rationality and social preferences. Current research covers a broad range of topics in public economics and political economy including misperception of the welfare state, civic engagement and corruption, social mobility and equality of opportunity, and workplace norms. Several ongoing projects are concerned with voter manipulation (e.g. vote buying, fake news, slanted information, emotional and moralizing politics) and their economic and the psychological drivers (e.g. motivated reasoning, self-image concerns).

Jean-Robert Tyran has published more than 50 papers in refereed journals, including field journals such as Journal of Public Economics, American Economic Journal: Applied Economics as well as in general interest journals such as American Economic Review, Econometrica, Review of Economic Studies, Economic Journal, Journal of the European Economic Association and Science.
