Abstract

We explore the variation in the impact of corruption on political trust among the citizens of European states. Assuming that people who have been socialized in countries with lower levels of quality of democracy have lower expectations regarding the adherence to democratic principles we argue that the extent of the negative effect of corruption on political trust depends on the level of quality of democracy in a given country. This hypothesis is supported by a multivariate analysis which shows that the negative effect of political corruption is significantly stronger in countries with a high level of quality of democracy compared to countries with a low level of quality of democracy.
